The Knight of the Morning gained fame for his assumption of the throne of Hatheg after the Dilettante’s Revolution. The sorcerer-historian Yan Jun, one of the accidental leaders of the revolution, happened to be in the Copper Teapot when the revolution began, and set it down thus: “The Copper Teapot is situated along the southern face of Cherrystone Square. The man we came to know as the Knight of the Morning, upon hearing the daily hangings meant to cow the people, stood up and walked out into the square, saying that it was putting him off his tea. The blaze of sunlight through the rice paper walls cast strange shadows on the walls of the teahouse and we all piled out to see what was happening. Ten minutes later the surviving dozen of us found all the soldiers and their wyld tainted beasts dead, ourselves in control of Cherrystone Square and at the head of a revolution. Two hours after that, led by the Knight of the Morning, we took the local garrison. Within three days half the city was in flames and the rest under our control. A week after that the Knight of the Morning was crowned the Maharaja of Hatheg by general acclamation.”

In the moments before the battle that marked the end of the Nightengale Heresy (known variously as the Battle of Daybreak Pass, Nightengale’s Folly and the Third Battle of Knifepoint Mountain), the heretics had driven Golden Eagle’s armies all the way back to his command post. When he saw his troops running out of the pass and toward his command post, he walked, alone, into the center of the pass, surveyed the host of heretics, and is reported to have said, “Is this all that you were running from?” The poet Liannius, whose depiction of the event was entered into the Deliberative’s records, says of the ensuing battle: “Five times the Heretics attacked on the first day, and five again on the second. On the third their tattered army could only muster four attacks before they withdrew, so the Golden Eagle was obliged to charge them the final time. Let no one doubt his dedication to the poetic principle.”

After his suppression of the Wasted Land Riots, Virtuous Reaper was given command of the Titan of the South. He staffed the Titan-class vessel with his personal legion, the Steel Raptors; an army some 10,000 strong and composed of elite mortal troops, Dragon Blooded staff officers, and young Lawgivers looking to make a name for themselves. The Steel Raptors were awarded numerous commendations for their handling of the Wasted Land Riots, which threatened to turn local food riots into a full scale revolution in the South following a plague, drought and subsequent famine. (Related note: Virtuous Reaper was in Meru at the time of the Usurpation. The last recorded commander of the Titan of the South was Virtuous Reaper’s second in command: Kai Fang, his wife and herself a Chosen of Luna of great renown. Shodan’s final log entry from the Titan of the South records the transmission, confirmation and execution of the Titan’s self-destruct code. The time stamp corresponds roughly to the start of the Usurpation.)
